Olympia 2021: Twice gold in the high jump for Tamberi and Barshim
Novum in the high jump: For the first time, there are two Olympic champions in the classic discipline. The Italian Gianmarco Tamberi and world champion Mutaz Essa Barshim from Qatar surprised in Tokyo both 2.37 m and then failed at 2.39 m.
Since both had the same number of failed attempts, they shared the victory and received gold. Third was the Belarusse Maxim Nedasekau, who also came to 2.37 m. "It's unreal, it's crazy, I'm so happy," Barshim said, "This medal was still missing me, now I'm complete. It's a great feeling to share the gold with Marco."
The 30-year-old Barshim, who had bronze and 2016 silver, secured Qatar with the second Olympic gold medal in the state history. One day before, weightlift Fares El-Bakh had triumphed. Ex-European Champion Tamberi (29) had never won an Olympic medal before.
Juvaughn Harrison (USA), with the aim of bringing the first road to get gold as early as in 1896 both in high and in the long jump, seven was seven with 2.33 m. On Monday (10:20 am MESZ) he has his second medal elevation in the long jump final.
